Wednesday, June 29th . . . recovery time

After yesterday's double session which included evening speed work which I did all barefoot, today was a classic recovery day. Just 35 minutes of nice easy running making sure I keep a nice clean and crisp stride. I ran in the Luna's and, of course, they rock!!!

How would you compare the Wokova Feather http://www.unshoesminimalfootwear.com/feather.html to the Luna's?

Thanks for sharing your running journey. I did 3.5 miles barefoot last night and am surprised how good the feet/legs feel.

  2. I'm never tried the Unshoes but I suspect they are pretty good and I've heard positive things about them. I'm biased toward Barefoot Ted simply because he learned from Tarahumara how to make the huaraches and he was the first to bring the concept to back here and others made replicas afterwards.

That's just how I look at it.

  3. Which pair of Lunas did you purchase and why, may I ask?

  4. No problem at all. I purchased the Originals. I use hemp laces with the single tie lacing system.

I reached a point where even minimal racing shoes felt uncomfortable. I may have posted this before but after 3+ years of incorporating a good amount of barefoot running I hit some threshold point where all my racing shoes felt uncomfortable and started to impact my gait but every time I went barefoot, everything was right in terms of form, technique and gait.

At that point, I looked for the most minimal footwear available which, in my opinion, is sandal-like and/or moc-like designed footwear and I already had a pair of Luna sandals so I put them on for a run and loved them immediately. It was similar to running barefoot on the treadmill. Nothing is identical to barefoot but this was as close as I had experience, even more so than the KSOs which were my previous favorites.

At the end of the day, the major difference is "toe splay." If you watch any child while barefoot or any barefoot runner, at initial impact the toe spread and that process cannot be fully carried out with a narrow toe box and/or with material on the top of the foot which compresses on the top of the toes (hence why footwear like the Evo cause blisters).

With that, after a few weeks running in the Luna's I could feel the differences and I realized there is no traditionally designed shoe than can allow the foot to fully function naturally. The only remaining test for me was to prove I would race and run race pace in sandals and I did that and finished 2nd overall in a 5k race in the Luna's. Now, I'm done with all regular shoes, even racing shoes. I will only run either barefoot or in sandal-like designed footwear (and possibly some moc-like designed footwear although it's hard to find mocs that provide a secure fit).

  5. What will your shoe choice be in the Colorado winter?

I have made it down to where I only run in a zero drop shoe...currently either the VFF bikila Merrill Trail Glove or barefoot. Other than stiff ankles when I first get out of bed my lower extremities feel good. After running a mile or so barefoot and I put on the VFF and am amazed how much padding my foot feels...almost like running on marshmallows. So I am realizing, like you have mentioned several times, listen to your body's feedback and for that feedback to be accurate you need to have nothing between you and the ground.

Regarding the Luna's...do you think it is personal perference to choose between the single tie method and the Equua elasticized laces?

    Thanks
