Life is like music; it must be composed by ear, feeling, and instinct, not by rule.

Saturday, July 16th . . . it's all clickin' . . .

55 min. run on packed dirt trails and roads. The last 3-4 days I feel like I've had the best running form since I started running regularly about 4 years ago. Everything is clicking, my choice of footwear has significantly narrowed, my arm placement, foot placement, and everything is in rhythm. I'm not sure how/why this occurred but I'm loving it. I feel like it's all coming together as a result of 4 years of continuous and committed running.

I've averaged 50-60 miles per week for over 3 years and I feel like I'm finally getting the pay back.

  1. I've noticed that after two years of doing what I think is a good minimalist/barefoot running, my running form got a leap in quality after using huaraches almost exclusively for a couple of months.

Do you think that your improvement can be due to huaraches to some negree?

  2. Huaraches have helped as has other minimalist footwear I used over the years including Evo's, KSO's, etc. I run primarily in Luna sandals and Nike XC's. What huaraches and other minimalist footwear has done for me is they helped me find my "rhythm." My stride is dictated by rhythm which changes based on speed, pace and other factors. Minimalist footwear has helped me hard code proper running form in my mind and refine my motor skills.

But at the end of the day, I credit practice, commitment and dedication for my improvement. I've been rewarded for several years of consistent high mileage running. It took me nearly 4 years of refining and tweaking to finally master my stride.

Obviously, there's always room for improvement but now running is so easy and natural. You have to master "your" stride and "your" stride will not be identical to anyone else's stride.
