Life is like music; it must be composed by ear, feeling, and instinct, not by rule.

Good Tempo Run; 3 Days to Marathon

Good morning tempo run.  5.19 miles in 38.36.  A solid 7.37 pace.  3 days to the marathon.  It's getting hard to concentrate; thoughts regarding the marathon are starting to take over.

Monday slow run; Marathon Week

Just finished 30 min. on the treadmill.  First time I ran on the treadmill in 7 months.  We're having a rare, late April snow storm and it's a bit icy.  Normally I would run outside anyway but I can't chance it with the marathon 6 days away.

The Morning Wakeup Run

Good morning tempo wakeup run.  5.78 miles in 46.52 (8.06 pace), with 8x2 min. strong/2 min. easy.

2 weeks to the marathon.  I'm ready.  Who know how I know?  Because I'm tired of training and my body is telling  my mind it's ready.  When that happens, you are ready.

Gotta Love the Snow Run

Just finished a 10.01 mile run in 1.45.53 in 6-12 inches of deep wet snow.  The pace was slow (10 min. pace) but it doesn't matter given the conditions outside.  It was great at times; not so great at other times but an inspirating  gut check run.

Another Runner's Dream Run

Just completed 6.01 miles in 49.03 (8.09 pace).  Light snow, morning darkness, 38 degrees, complete solitude, and perfect music on the iPod = my runner's dream situation! This is why I'm a runner!

Cool Sub 8 Pace

Completed 6.02 miles this morning in 48 min.; a 7.59 pace.  This is a major milestone for me as I've been working for 1 yr. to reduce my cruising pace to sub 8 min. miles.  I've been close and now I've finally done it.  Now the next challenge is to reduce my cruising pace to 7.45 then 7:30.

Be Thankful

Day 19-23.  I’m only taking the stairs except in a few instances where the office building can’t get their act together.  Several times I took the stairs; tried to access our floor and, guess what? . . . the door wouldn’t open.  So, back down to the lobby; I tell them about the problem; they say they’ll fix it.  I try it a few hours later and then the next day; in all cases, the door still won’t open.  To make matters worse it will not open from the stairs or the hallway.  I tell the lobby person again, and, again, it still has problems; works sometimes; doesn’t work others.  One would think, just for liability protection, if nothing else, they would fix the damn door . . . just baffling.

Then, to make matters worse, some folks at the building have an attitude when you simply report a problem and except them to do their job.  Here’s an idea . . . do your job?  It is baffling that in this environment where we are blessed to have jobs (so much suffering out there) and we still have folks that don’t want to do their jobs . . . time for a reality check.

Here are 3 ideas:

1.      1.  Do your job!

2.       2. Don’t have a friggin attitude for no reason!

3.       3. Be thankful!  If that’s a challenge, just turn on the TV . . . there’s plenty of stories (unfortunately) of all the suffering in the world . . . we are blessed.

I’m 3 weeks from the marathon and, I have to admit, my feet are sore.  Probably mostly from the running but I do stand at work for at least 5 hours . . . . but I still feel great!!!

Join me in boycotting regular desks (stand up) and elevators (take the stairs); lastly, get off your butt, put on the running shoes, and pound the pavement . . . just one step at a time!

Peace.

15 miler completed

Finished a nice run; 15.33 miles in 2 hr. 11 min.  A nice easy 8.33 pace.  Weather was great; about 40 degrees; no wind; perfect.  Hit the runner's zone about mile 11.  Started to slow down around mile 12 and then got passed by a runner who got my competitive juices going and I paced right on his heels for 2 miles; probably a 7:30 pace but it woke me up and make the last 3 miles go by much faster.

Someone Said . . .

I heard this today; I can't take credit for it but it is so well said:

"There comes a point in your life when you realize who matters, who never did, who won't anymore...and who always will. So, don't worry about people from your past . . . there is a reason why they didn't make it to your future."

That is excellent.  Right in line with my goal to remove all the negative and high maintenance folks from my life.

Is City Life, a Good Life? Probably a Closed Box

Day 16-18 on the stairs and back from the kids’ spring break.  Forcing myself back into the work mindset; always tough returning from a vacation but all is well.  I missed yoga last Thursday due to the holiday’s so I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s session . .. I’m sure I’ll pay but it will be worth it.

The stairs today required some extra effort because the exit closest to me wasn’t operating correctly; in fact, the door wouldn’t open.  I told the front desk and they said they’d fix it but they haven’t fixed it yet.  Now, as an attorney, I’m thinking, “isn’t this a bit of a hazard; folks can’t exit the building from the nearest exit if an emergency were to arise . . . “  In any event, I had to use the exit at the opposite end of the floor.  Hope these building folks get this fixed ASAP.

Thoughts of the day:

  1. What risky decision have you made recently?  Or, do you always chose the save road?  What does your answer say about you?  How do you feel about your answer knowing we only live once?
  2. While jogging on a deserted road in the mountains through a small town, every car that passed (probably only 8-10 over a 3 hr. period) waived and, in fact, one old lady asked if I needed a ride.  This would never occur in the city?  Are we that damn scared?  That consumed with ourselves?  If yes, then we live in a box; that’s sad.  Is that a good life?  A good environment for kids?
  3. It’s not fair that I ran this morning in 14 degree weather and it’s now 51 degrees.  That’s the theme of my life as an early morning runner . . . oh well.

I’m sure I’ll have more to share later this week.

Peak Long Run Completed

Finished my peak long run yesterday.  20.07 miles in 3 hr. 16 min.  A slower pace for me but I ran at 8,000 ft. and the last 10 miles I ran into a strong 40+ mph wind; very brutal in the most uplifting and inspiring way.

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions

I'm hangin' out in my favorite small town in the world.  It's a bit windy down here and the elevation is prety high (above 8,000 ft.).  I can't decide whether to do my long run (20 miles) today or tomorrow.  It's windy today but 49 degrees; tomorrow is not suppose to be windy at all but 29 degrees.  Pick your poision I guess but, nevertheless, it's magical in this town; the way live is suppose to be; I think us big city folks are way off path; we got it wrong.

Great 1 hr. tempo run

Great tempo run.  Just finished 7.56 miles in 1 hr. with 4 min. very strong followed by 20 min. at marathon pace with another 4 min. very strong (8.09 pace).  Did 16 min. on the front and back end.  Total peace; no one on the trail.

It was a tough start.  My mind and body said "I'm not running today."  I had a mental battle with myself but forced myself out the door; just one step at at time.
