Thinking of Writing a Short Book

I'm thinking of writing a short instruction manual/book on how to become a runner in a short period of time. I've logged every mile since I started running in early 2007 and, less than 3 years later, I'm running 40 mile weeks, completed a few marathons and half marathons, run up to a 10k barefoot, ditched shoes, etc. A ton of stuff has happened but my daily running manual could show someone how to start from scratch and become a runner with a little desire and commitment.

I'd enjoy some feedback on whether that would be a good idea.

  1. There's no reason not to do it. A lot of people just jump into running thinking it's easy, but hardly that if you don't know a single thing about it.

On a side note, there's an interesting running shoes article on NY Times' website called "Wiggling Their Toes at the Show Giants."

  2. sounds like a good idea to me. I'm brand new to barefoot running. trying to get back into it injury free. I'd be interested to know how your transition went. I'm finding I enjoy it, but have some foot pain right now. I guess my feet are getting used to the idea.

  3. Not a bad idea, especially if you write it from a 'I'm a normal person just like you' kind of point of view. And speaking of teaching yourself an activity in a short amount of time, have you read any Tim Ferriss? I have only seen a talk by him and read a couple of his blog posts, but he apparently has a methodology for becoming an expert on any subject in a short amount of time that might be interesting as a comparison for how you've come along.

  4. Evan, very interesting, I'll have to check it out. You are right on, in that my approach would be exactly that, being a normal person who didn't run, who discovered running then ended up running in VFFs (and some barefoot). May be interesting to a few folks.
